In addition to working in the Fanwood Garden, the students have completed over 100 hours of service at the Food Bank For Westchester in Elmsford, NY. This week they proudly received their official Volunteer shirts, in recognition of their time and effort.
Established in 2012, Fanwood’s Food Bank Garden is one of the largest contributors of organic produce to the Food Bank for Westchester. Under the guidance of the Food Bank, NYSD grows organic vegetables and herbs on campus. The Fanwood Garden contributes well over 3,000 pounds of fresh vegetables to the Food Bank annually.
Once harvested, the Food Bank for Westchester distributes the produce to hunger relief programs throughout the county. The garden provides an opportunity for NYSD students to utilize life skills, work on vocational training and give back to the community. In addition, it provides students the opportunity to get hands-on experience by learning different aspects of how the garden works.
