The Board of Trustees is extremely pleased to announce that we have engaged a new Interim Superintendent. We feel extremely fortunate to have been able to identify a highly qualified superintendent familiar with New York schools. Effective Monday, August 1, Dr. Harold Mowl, Jr. will join the Fanwood family. In his role, Dr. Mowl will work with the Board to search for a permanent head of School and provide leadership to the School community during this very important time, our 200th Anniversary year.
Dr. Mowl has over 45 years of experience in deaf education. He was the Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer of the Rochester School for the Deaf, which serves deaf and hard of hearing students and clients from central and western New York through its educational and outreach programs and services. He served there for 25 years and retired from that position on June 30, 2015. In addition, Dr. Mowl was Chairperson of the 4201 Schools Association, a coalition of 11 schools for deaf, blind and physically disabled children in New York State. Among other community involvement, he was the past president of the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD). In addition he was the Chairperson of National Technical Institute for the Deaf’s (NTID) National Advisory Group. He continues to serve on the Board of Trustees at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, his alma mater.
Dr. Mowl has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Bethany College, master’s degree in education of the hearing impaired from the University of Pittsburgh, and a doctorate in special education from the University of Pittsburgh.
We believe Dr. Mowl’s experience, knowledge and in depth understanding of 4201 Schools and the New York State Education Department will serve us extremely well. Dr. Mowl and his wife Mary currently reside in Pittsford, New York.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Mowl and Mary to Fanwood!
